Basic Computer Specifications for Canvas

Updated on January 7, 2025

This is a list of basic computer system requirements to use Canvas. It is always recommended to use the most up-to-date versions and better connections. Canvas will still run with the minimum specifications, but you may experience slower loading times. Canvas and its hosting infrastructure are designed for maximum compatibility and minimal requirements.

See the ITS webpage on Operating Systems and Mobile Devices for information on versions recommended for use at BC. Content on Canvas sites is often best viewed on a laptop, desktop or tablet, although the mobile versions work well for using some features on smartphones.

Find recommendations from Canvas on requirements for:

  • Browsers, including verification that yours is up to date, and information on privacy.
  • Limited support guidelines for mobile browsers
  • Computer and internet capacity

Canvas is “committed to W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative and Section 508 guidelines.” Read more about:

  • Canvas accessibility standards
  • Supported screen readers, and using them to navigate Canvas
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Accessibility aspects of Canvas features

Integrated third party tools such as Respondus, Panopto, Poll Everywhere and Perusall have their own accessibility standards.

As with any online technology, glitches can occasionally happen, and they can often be fixed by restarting your browser or clearing the cache. If you encounter persistent problems accessing or using Canvas, please contact the Helpdesk.
