Lockdown Browser is a locked browser for use with exams within Canvas. If you will be using it in a course you are taking, see the information below on downloading and installing the BC-specific version you will need to use. If you already have Lockdown Browser but it has been several weeks since you have used it and you are preparing to use it again, see the information below on checking for updates.
Install LockDown Browser on a Mac:
- Verify that you are directly logged in as a user with “allow user to administer this computer”
- If you have used LockDown Browser at another institution:
- in Finder > Applications, drag “LockDown Browser” into the Trash
- in Finder > Downloads, drag any previously downloaded LockDown Browser installers into the trash, usually “InstallLDBPackage64c-2-a-b-cc.zip”
- Empty the Trash.
- Download LockDown Browser
- Install LockDown Browser
- Open LockDown Browser to verify the install
Install LockDown Browser on a PC:
- If you have used LockDown Browser at another institution:
- Windows > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program > Select LockDown Browser and uninstall
- Empty the trash
- Download LockDown Browser
- Install LockDown Browser
- Open LockDown Browser to verify the install
Accessing LockDown Browser Before a Quiz
In order to avoid connectivity issues, restart your computer before opening LockDown Browser.
You will access your exam in LockDown Browser differently depending on whether your instructor used New or Classic Quizzes in their Canvas course.
- In Classic Quizzes, navigate to the LockDown Browser app where you will be prompted to login to Canvas.
- In New Quizzes, use your normal browser to navigate to the quiz in Canvas where you will be prompted to open LockDown Browser to access the quiz. If you attempt to start in the LockDown Browser app to access an exam in New Quizzes, you will receive an error message.
Use LockDown Browser on a Chromebook
If you are using a Chromebook, you will need to add the LockDown Browser extension to the Chrome Browser to use Respondus. You can do so by following the standard Download and install LockDown Browser link, which will also be provided when you first open a Canvas Quiz that requires LockDown Browser. (You will NOT be able to search for the app directly from the Chrome web store.) The LockDown Browser installation link will direct you to the Chrome web store, where you can select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension.

Using Respondus Monitor
If you are taking an online exam outside a classroom or other proctored setting, you may be required to use LockDown Browser along with Respondus Monitor, which will record you during the test. Since Monitor requires significant bandwidth, it’s best to use a hard-wired Ethernet connection, if possible, or to be as close to the router or access point as possible. We also recommend restarting the computer, and shutting down all other programs running on the computer as well as those that might be running on your network (Netflix, etc.).
View Results after Taking your Quiz
Consult your instructor to find out what will be visible to you, and when. For Quizzes taken with Lockdown Browser, results must be viewed by going through the link to the Quiz in Assignments or Quizzes, rather than through the Gradebook. Lockdown Browser will open, presenting you with a button to View Results.
Lockdown Browser Updates
If you are missing a required update when you begin a quiz, you will be prompted to complete the update before proceeding to the quiz). To update proactively, find Lockdown Browser in your applications and open it, select the “i” button from the toolbar, and then click “Check for Update”. The version will be displayed and you will be able to download a newer version if one is available.
