Lecture Capture

Panopto + Modules

Although Panopto recordings are published to the “Panopto Recordings” tab in Canvas, there may be occasions when lectures recorded with Panopto Lecture or Personal capture function as part of a course module. This tutorial explains how to display Panopto recordings in “Modules.”

Retrieve Recording Session URL

Begin in the “Panopto Recordings” tab in your Canvas course site. Roll over the session title to reveal its menu options. Click “share.”

Session menu options

Highlight the session URL address under the section heading “Link” and copy by left clicking with your mouse (or command + c on Mac). You will need this URL in later steps. After copying the URL, close the “settings” menu by clicking the “x” in the upper right corner of the window.

Add External URL to Canvas Module

Select “Modules” from the Canvas course menu on the left side of the page [1]. To add a recording to an existing module, click the “add” icon (plus sign) next to the module title [2].

The “Add Item” menu will appear. Select “External URL” from the drop down menu [5]. Paste the session URL you copied in Step 2 in the text field next to “URL” [6] and then give the page a title [7]. If you want the recording to open up in a new tab, check the box next to “Load in a new tab.” If you want students to view the recording from with the Canvas course page, leave this box unchecked [8]. Next, click “Add Item” [9].

Add External URL

The recorded session will then appear in the module. Click the cloud icon next to the session title to publish the recording. When users click on the session link in the module, the Panopto viewer will open up from within the course page (unless “load in a new tab” was selected in the previous step).
