It is possible to have an assignment in Canvas where students submit videos that they have created themselves. Students can create a short video where they offer commentary on course material or demonstrate their understanding of a concept. You may also want students to record videos in which they express dynamic skills learned in class such as interviewing a research participant.
The Panopto / Canvas integration makes it possible for instructors to set up a Canvas Assignment where students can upload recordings into Panopto as their submission, without the need for the instructor to enter Panopto and make any adjustments there. The submission process will automatically generate a folder in Panopto to receive student work, and the instructor can view and provide detailed feedback on submitted videos in SpeedGrader.
For more information, see the Instructor Guide for Panopto Video Assignments.
- Each recording will only be visible to the instructor and the student who submitted it. To make recordings visible to the whole class, create a Discussion.
- You can provide your students instruction on submitting their videos for both Assignments and Discussions by sharing the Student Guide for Panopto Video Assignments with them.
Other options for Student Recordings
A Panopto assignment is best when students need to include screen content. Allowing students to submit media recordings in a Canvas Assignment are best for talking head recordings (you can allow students to submit media recordings in Discussions if you want students to view and respond to one another’s videos), and recording in Zoom or on personal devices might work best if these tools more familiar and address what students need to accomplish.
